Stories of change

The people behind the numbers

Impact isn't a statistic — it's a young person who found a path forward. Here are three of them.

Neema in her tomato field in Morogoro
Morogoro · Digital Agriculture

“Now I read my soil before I plant.”

Neema, 24, inherited a single acre and a lot of guesswork. Through FODA's Smart Farm programme she learned to use moisture sensors and a mobile market app. In two seasons her tomato yield doubled, she negotiated better prices with buyers in Dar es Salaam, and she now employs four other young people from her village.

“Technology made farming feel like a choice, not a last resort.”

Baraka mentoring younger students
Dodoma · Youth Empowerment

“I built my first sensor at fifteen.”

Baraka joined a FODA robotics club with no idea what code was. Within a year he had built a simple moisture sensor for his family's garden and won a regional innovation fair. He now mentors younger students at his school and dreams of studying electrical engineering.

“The club showed me that the things I use were made by people — and I could be one of them.”

A youth cooperative's solar installation
Pwani · Climate Action

“We brought light to our own village.”

A group of eight young people trained through Solar for Communities formed a cooperative, installed a solar mini-grid, and now maintain it as a small business. Sixty homes, a health post and a primary school have reliable power for the first time — and the cooperative earns a living from it.

“People used to leave for the city. Now there is work worth staying for.”

In their words

What partners and participants say

“
FODA doesn't just train young people and leave. They stay, they follow up, and the results show it.
Mwalimu Joyce K.
Head Teacher, Dodoma
“
Our cooperative's harvest and our income both grew. The young agronomists speak our language and respect our experience.
Hamisi S.
Farmer cooperative chair, Iringa
“
A rare partner that measures honestly and shares the credit with the community. That's why we keep working with them.
